Dr. James McPherson is medical director of the Southern California Vein Center. Dr. McPherson is board certified in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery and performs all aspects of adult cardiac, general thoracic and peripheral vascular surgery. Dr. McPherson spent his early years in New York before attending the University of Southern California where he received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. He then attended Tulane University where he received his Doctor of Medicine as well as a Master of Public Health.
He then completed his general surgery training at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City. As Chief Resident, McPherson was awarded the Outstanding Teaching Award. Dr. McPherson returned to USC to complete three years of specialty training in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery.
After serving four years on the USC faculty, Dr. McPherson founded the Los Angeles Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Group, focusing on minimally invasive therapy for cardiovascular disease. He has been a regular participant in major national vascular meetings dealing with diagnosis and treatment of varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency. In 2016, he accepted a position at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard as Medical Director of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. He is a firm believer that minimally invasive approaches to treating varicose veins and venous insufficiency decrease pain and allow patients to return to active living.
Dr. McPherson continues to serve the community by encouraging students to pursue a career in medicine. He is fluent in English and Spanish and has made numerous television and radio appearances educating the public on heart, lung and vascular disease. In his free time, he enjoys travel and is an avid fan of tennis, scuba diving and college football. He is also passionate about music and listens to an eclectic variety of music ranging from Miles Davis to Mozart.
Dr. McPherson has three beautiful daughters who are graduates of Howard University, Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (Los Angeles) and USC. He and his wife Valarie live in Westlake Village.
