- About the Practice
Dr. McPherson is board certified in general and cardiothoracic surgery and performs all aspects of adult cardiac, general thoracic and peripheral vascular surgery including Radiofrequency Ablation (RF).
Radiofrequency ablation, or RF ablation, is a vein treatment that uses radiofrequency energy to clear away varicose veins. Varicose veins are the prominent twisted veins that appear on the legs and feet, causing embarrassment and pain. Rather than just ignoring them or hoping they will go away on their own, it is best to address them with an effective vein treatment like RF ablation.
In some cases, this treatment can be paired with other vein-therapy options that we provide, including sclerotherapy.
Radiofrequency ablation offers numerous benefits:
At the start of an RF ablation session, local anesthesia is administered to the treatment area. This is done in order to numb the region to any pain or discomfort that would otherwise be experienced.
Once the anesthesia has taken effect, ultrasound technology is used to help guide a small catheter into the targeted vein. This specialized catheter is able to emit radiofrequency energy.
After it is placed, it emits energy into the walls of the vein. This heat damages the walls, making them collapse. This makes it so the vein is cut off from its blood supply and is destroyed. Once the catheter is taken out of the vein, the area is bandaged.
Right after the treatment has been performed, ultrasound testing may be conducted to ensure that the treatment was effective.
Once you have returned home after the radiofrequency ablation session, you will not need to deal with any sort of downtime or recovery time. Walking will be possible immediately after treatment. Resting for one to two hours after you get home may be recommended, but it is typically not required.
Wearing compression garments helps to ensure that the new blood flow in the legs is healthy. Wear these garments for a minimum of two weeks.
The body gradually and safely absorbs the treated veins over time, causing them to disappear and restoring a more attractive appearance to the treated area. Because of this, the results of radiofrequency ablation are not immediately visible. They improve over the span of a few days, and final results can typically be seen around two weeks after the treatment.
